Deep Tissue Spa Massage

Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic form of massage that focuses on all layers of muscles and connective tissue from superficial to deepest. The therapist will use slower, stronger strokes and techniques that will penetrate deep into muscles and tissue.
How does deep tissue massage work? When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (areas of tight and/or ischemic tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation. Deep tissue massage works by breaking down these adhesions and bringing in a fresh supply of blood to area and removing the toxic buildup that has been in the ‘stuck’ tissue.
How is Deep Tissue Massage effective/beneficial? Deep tissue massage is effective because of its technique – consisting of some of the same strokes may be similar to Swedish massage, but the movement is slower and the pressure is deeper and concentrated on areas of tension and pain. Your therapist will utilize a variety of strokes and technique in order to best meet your particular needs.
Will deep tissue massage hurt? At certain points during the massage, there may be some discomfort. It is important to tell the massage therapist when the discomfort you are experiencing is outside your comfort range.
There may be some soreness after a deep tissue massage, but it should subside within a day or so. The massage therapist may recommend applying ice to the area after the massage.
